For those of you who aren't already aware of their work, I'd like to introduce you to the National Taxpayers Union (NTU). Headed by President John Berthoud, NTU has been one of the foremost leaders in the fight against higher taxes.

NTU is a nationally-based taxpayer lobby dedicated to fighting taxes and wasteful spending at all levels of government for over 35 years. Thanks for your introduction, Nathan. The 350,000-member National Taxpayers Union was founded back in 1969 on one very basic principle concerning tax dollars: "This is your money and the government should return as much as possible to you." Before NTU's founding, there was no organization that provided a voice for taxpayers here in Washington D.C. The city abounded in lobbying firms representing every special interest imaginable, each with its own agenda requiring millions to billions of taxpayer dollars to enact. But, until 1969, the taxpayer himself had nobody protecting his rights or fighting to save his tax dollars.

A few of NTU's significant accomplishments over the years include:

* Income tax indexing, so inflation no longer bumps taxpayers into higher brackets

* Landmark "Taxpayer Bill of Rights" laws that help to safeguard against IRS abuses

* Bringing the Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution within one vote of passing the Congress

* Reform of taxpayer-funded Congressional mailing system, and public mailing cost disclosure by each member of Congress

* Repeal of the Catastrophic Surtax on senior citizens

* Dozens of successful state and local tax limitation movements --activists have defeated 90% of the 50 major tax increases that appeared on state ballots over the past five years

NTU fights Big Government on behalf of individual taxpayers like yourself, both here in Washington and in the states. But we are nothing without members who are willing to join NTU, adding their actions to those of other like-minded individuals nationwide, and providing NTU with the financial support necessary to coordinate these efforts and to defeat special interests in open battle.
